Positively Pink Fitness Program

March 16, 2010

The Simon Family JCC is now accepting applications for Positively Pink, a free program for people dealing with breast cancer.  This program is open to those who are currently undergoing or post treatment for breast cancer.  It is an eight week program which meets every Tuesday and Thursday, 1pm-2:30pm beginning the end of May.  We will be accepting fifteen (15) participants who have completed all mandatory paperwork on a first-come first-serve basis.  Any other interested participants will be put on the waiting list for the Fall program.

The Simon Family JCC has partnered with Jewish Family Service and Susan G Komen for the Cure Tidewater, in order to provide a caring, nurturing environment for those affected by breast cancer.  The program’s goal is to improve overall quality of life by reducing fatigue and improving the immune system.  The program is free, but a physician’s approval is required for participation.  Positively Pink creates a positive, energetic healthy environment in which cancer survivors can become stronger and less fatigued.  The specially tailored exercise program includes aerobic exercise, stretching and strength building.  In addition, health education lectures will be given on such topics as exercise, nutrition, yoga, cancer treatment and self-esteem.  It is an eight week program.  Classes will last 90 minutes and include 30 minutes of education and 60 minutes of exercising.  Classes will be taught by certified personal trainers and Certified Cancer Exercise Specialists.

To become a participant in Positively Pink a registration packet must be completed including a physicians approval form.   The registration packets may be picked up at the Simon Family JCC, 5000 Corporate Woods Drive, Virginia Beach.  For more information call Terry Corrigan at the Simon Family JCC at (757) 321-2327, tcorrigan@simonfamilyj.org or Starr Kimmer at (757) 321-2322 or e-mail at skimmer@simonfamilyj.org.
