Sentara Obici Hospital’s project is Breast Health Education
and Screening in Rural Suffolk and Surrounding Areas. They area a is a
new grantee with us this year. The hospital is located in Suffolk and
serve Suffolk, Isle of Wight, Franklin City and Southampton county. They
have a grant to provide mammorgrams, clinical breast exams and education to
100 low income under or uninsured women. They are recruiting
patients through their church communities. This allows them to provide
breast health education to even larger groups of people and to create a
partnership for continuing education. The program director and the nurse
navigator were certified to perform clinical breast exams through a small grant
they received earlier in the year. This has allowed them to do
comprehensive clinical breast exams at no cost to the patients.
Thank you to our volunteers who volunteered in the last month. We could not fight breast cancer without you. Here are some event coming up in October where we need volunteers – maybe you can help:

Pink4Mo teammate, Julia, lost her Aunt Jan to breast cancer in 2002 after a 7 year battle. Julia has been voluntering and participating in the SGK Tidewater Race since 2003 to honor and celebrate her Aunt Jan's memory. When it came time to pick a team name in 2010, teammates Julia & Tracey got together and decided that they would be Passionately Pink for Monique, to celebrate their good friend Monique's journey through breast cancer treatment. This is the 2nd year that we are Pink4Mo and we look forward to watching Pink4Mo grow each year. Monique is a fantastic and energetic woman who has been described as "sunshine personified." She's a fantastic survivor and great friend. We are Passionately Pink for Monique!
Sadly the team suffered a sudden and unexpected non-cancer related loss this year. Ethan was super supportive of Julia's efforts for SGK Tidewater and the Race every year, and it seemed only natural to designate his Race fundraising page when the family decided they would prefer charitable donations in lieu of flowers. Donations to Ethan's page continue to bring healing and comfort to Julia as Ethan continues to support her passion for the mission (through the kindness of others) in spite of his physical absence.
Another way the team is raising money is through an office Snackshop, where snacks and drinks are sold in a teammate's office that doesn't have its own vending machines. One teammate designated a portion of her home business proceeds to the team. Plans are in the works for team shirts and accessories, and team fundraising has become a year-round effort. Passionately Pink is still recruiting new members in hopes of reaching a team size of at least 15 people in 2011. We are Passionately Pink for Monique! Race for the cure is only a few weeks away! This year, Komen Tidewater will have a Pre-race Expo on October 14, 2011, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. We are encouraging that all participants come to the Expo, between the hours of 1:00pm-8:00pm to pick up their packets, t-shirts, check out our sponsors, and meet this year's grantees to learn what they have been doing to help end breast cancer forever. The expo will be featuring a health and wellness portion of the expo along with entertainment brought to you by Clear Channel. This is a great opportunity for teams to meet and take their team pictures, then head over to one of the four YNot Pizza locations in Hampton Roads for a Captain Carb-up Night. Panera Bread is inviting its customers to join in the fight against breast cancer with its signature Pink Ribbon Bagels.
On Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 participating bakery-cafes in the Hampton Roads area will donate 100 percent of the net proceeds from the sale of Pink Ribbon Bagels to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tidewater. Komen works to save lives and end breast cancer by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find cures.
During the remainder of October, the same bakery-cafes will donate 10 cents for every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold and $1 for ever Power of Pink baker’s dozen sold to Komen for the entire month. Throughout the country, Panera Bread contributes to a variety of breast cancer causes.
The Panera Pink Ribbon Bagel is shaped like a pink ribbon and baked fresh daily at Panera Bread bakery-cafes. It features cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, vanilla, honey and brown sugar. The product follows the tradition of “thinking pink” during the month of October in the quest to eradicate breast cancer disease. Sue Stees, one of Panera Bread’s first franchisees and a breast cancer survivor, developed the idea for the Pink Ribbon Bagel in 2001 as a way to help support the cause.
“Panera Bread is committed to serving members of the local community, many of whom have had their lives touched by breast cancer,” said Cori Lintner, local marketing manager for Panera Bread. “Komen has been a local leader in the cause for many years, and we are honored to partner with them in the fight to find a cure for breast cancer.”
“Panera Bread has been a loyal community partner of Komen and our mission to end breast cancer for several years,” said Ilona Webb-Bruner, executive director of the Tidewater Komen affiliate. “Everyone can enjoy a delicious bagel while also knowing they are helping to save lives.”
