Major step in personalized treatment — Thanks to a 2007 research grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, scientists identified a set of 50 genes that oncologists can potentially use to tailor individualized treatments for all breast cancer patients.

These projects have been selected by our independent Grant Review Panel as those that will have the greatest impact in serving uninsured or underinsured women in our service area. Please note that Susan G. Komen for the Cure is not a direct service provider.

Complete Breast Health, Organization: Peninsula Institute for Community Health

Amount requested $30,000 - Complete Breast Health is an education, prevention and early breast cancer detection program for under and uninsured female patients enrolled in their clinic. PICH is an EWL program provider, and the grant requests funding for screening mammograms for those women ages 40-49.

Survivor Safety Net Alliance, Organization: Mt. Sinai Gospel Tabernacle

Amount requested $14,933 - The Community Health Educator, who works closely with the EWL program, provides support for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer. This program will provide financial assistance for 7 patients diagnosed with breast cancer; salary support for the community health educator.

Temporary Aid for Breast Cancer Patients in Treatment, Organization: Organization Sentara Dorothy G Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center

Amount requested $20,000 - This program will provide temporary financial assistance for up to 40 low income breast cancer patients who are currently in treatment or are within 12 months of completing treatment. Many of these women experience financial difficulties as they struggle to maintain their households and keep down jobs.

Every Woman's Life Matters, Organization: Eastern Shore Health District

Amount Requested $77,757 - The Eastern Shore Health District has been an active provider of EWL for Accomack and Northampton Counties with an established program. However many women who are not age 50 are excluded from yearly clinical breast exams and screening mammograms. Funds are requested to enroll in their clinic women under the age of 50 with income less than 200% of the poverty level to participate; continue their education awareness program for participant enrollment; transportation costs for outreach and patients; salary for the EWL program coordinator.

The Complete Woman, Organization: Beach Health Clinic

Amount requested $37,188 - This project provides screening mammograms for impoverished and minority women of Virginia Beach who cannot afford health insurance. These women are ineligible for Medicaid or Medicare. The goal is to promote comprehensive breast care for women in need. Funds are also requested for screening mammograms; patient transportation costs; salaries for a day and evening breast clinic coordinator.

Women's Health Screening, Organization: Hampton Health Department

Amount requested $26,785 - This project goal is to enroll, screen and provide diagnostic services to 140 low income, uninsured women living in Hampton who are not eligible for EWL program.

Breast Health Alliance Program, Organization: Riverside Cancer Services

Amount requested $99,707 - BHAP in a comprehensive program for underserved women in the Peninsula community. It provides services for those women eligible and not eligible for EWL program. It provides educational outreach programs to help reduce the disparity in breast health in this population. Funds are requested to cover a goal of 200 enrollees not eligible for EWL; partial salary funds are requested for outreach coordinator.

Breast Evaluation Program - Reducing Breast Cancer Mortality Among Medically Indigent Women, Organization: Eastern Virginia Medical School

Amount requested $102,647 - BEP provides a highly effective breast clinic for uninsured and underinsured women with a breast concern. Each patient receives a thorough evaluation including breast physical assessment, breast self exam training and utilization of diagnostic services. Funds are requested also for salaries for nurse navigator and LPN.

Totally Pink For Life, Organization: Chesapeake Regional Medical Center

Amount requested $24,721.96 - To promote recovery of women with breast cancer, this exercise and education program is offered for women who are minimally one year for their initial treatment and up to one-year post treatment. The goal is to enhance the quality of life through a special exercise and education program free of charge for 45 women. Salary support is requested for fitness specialists.

Temporary Financial Aid for Low Income Breast Cancer Patients, Organization: Eastern Virginia Medical School

Amount requested $5,000 - The BEP will provide temporary financial assistance for up to 20 eligible breast cancer patients currently in treatment or within 12 months of completing treatment. The goal will be to ease some of the financial burden faced by these high risk patients undergoing breast cancer treatment.

Bon Secours Breast Cancer Survivor Retreats, Organization: Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center

Amount requested $25,400 - BSMMC will offer two multi-day breast cancer survivor retreats from the Tidewater area. These retreats will focus on coping, healthy lifestyles, long-term treatment side effects and spirituality. The learning methods will be a mixture of healing approaches.

Breast Health for Women with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Organization: Hope House Foundation

Amount requested $13,150 - There are very few health and wellness programs which address the unique need of persons with developmental disabilities and even fewer that train health care providers how to work supportively and effectively with disabled patients. As a result breast health and screening are neglected. In order to serve this population a unique breast health program was created by Hope House that continues to address the challenges in this population.

Bridgin the Gap, Organization Chesapeake Health Department

Amount requested $25,825.50 - The Chesapeake Health Department is an EWL provider site and this program provides screening mammograms to 75 women ages 40-49, not eligible for EWL program as well as educational material. Funds are requested also for salaries of project director and administrative support person.
